Viewing an item as a connected whole
Historical material often survives as more than one page. This experiment treats the envelope, letter, notice and railway warrant as elements of one archival item, while still allowing each element to be examined individually.
What this item tells us
In February 1918, John Charles F. Doyle was summoned by the Ministry of National Service to attend a medical examination, with a return railway warrant provided for his journey. The envelope, appointment letter, warning notice and travel document together show how Britain’s wartime conscription system entered ordinary lives through bureaucracy, travel and the threat of compulsory service.

What this experiment tests
The viewer shows one element at a time while preserving the structure of the complete item. Users can move backwards and forwards, select an element from the thumbnail strip, zoom and pan the document, enter full-screen mode and open a structured metadata panel.
The element descriptions are loaded from a separate JSON file. This allows the same viewer to be reused for letters, postcards, booklets, photograph groups and larger archival documents without rebuilding the page for every item.
